4 Hour Lecture &
Demo Contents: Attendees will have the first hand opportunity to:
-
Get first hand
information from a cancer survivor during the lecture that has had
reconstructive surgery and augmentation
-
Learn about soft
tissue rehabilitative approach to treating post operative issues
-
See and learn first
hand the various techniques and modalities that may be used to address the
client's presenting issues such as Scar work, DAP, Neuromuscular treatment
techniques
-
Get a better
understanding of the role these modalities and techniques play in the addressing
of post operative issues: Assessment, Swedish Massage, Myofascial
Techniques, Joint Mobilisations, DAP, Breast Massage, TMJ, Hydro Therapy,
Lymph Drainage Techniques
This
lecture/demonstration will focus on the therapeutic massage
techniques/modalities Paul Lewis uses in order to address post surgical issues
from mastectomy and implant procedures. We will focus on Dynamic Angular
Petrissage (DAP), a treatment technique used to reduce stress on both the
therapist and client, providing relief to those who have undergone TRAM
reconstructive surgery, single or double mastectomy, as well as breast
augmentations and reductions. Altered sensations and possible causes, PNF
stretching along with techniques used to pinpoint and address areas of pain will
be demonstrated and discussed. The use of hydrotherapy and Scar work techniques
demonstrated. Self-Care exercises for the client will be demonstrated and
practiced as a group. Brief discussion of and a demonstration of joint
mobilisations and its use will also be covered. In addition a brief overview of
the upper body skeletal and muscular anatomy along with body mechanics will be
covered. Lastly, Paul Lewis will demonstrate a treatment on a patient that has
had a mastectomy, reconstructive surgery and augmentation bringing together the
points discussed in the lecture.
Patient Comments Post
Treatment:
"After the
therapeutic massage I felt physically rejuvenated - muscles and joints relaxed
and emotionally nurtured. I also felt a new level of acceptance of my body,
having entrusted it to someone who was not my doctor."
~
Cancer Survivor, Europe
"I was apprehensive
about how my body would cope with yet another form of treatment, but with very limited
rotation in my shoulder, along with restricted movement in my neck and a
constant numbness and tingling in my hands I felt I had little to lose from
trying something new. Glad I did."
~
Cancer Survivor, Canada
Learning objectives: At
the end of the course the learner will have a better understanding of:
-
The combined use of
various modalities involved in addressing each specific post operative issue
-
Importance of
assessment in determining which areas to treat
-
The use of Dynamic
Angular Petrissage (DAP) and how it is used in treatment
-
Reliably demonstrate
the ability to determine through reasoning which structures to address
required by student: a smile and a willingness ot learn
Pre-requisite:
This is a
lecture/demonstration so an understanding of anatomy is required.
