Deep Tissue Massage and Myofascial Techniques for the Foot, Knee and Hip

This three day class will greatly expand your skill in working with both injuries to the lower limb and also improving function for all of your clients.  We will cover in depth the complex chain of events that occur in the foot, knee, hip, pelvis, and resultant strain up the body when our clients have dysfunction in just any one of these links. This workshop will examine the kinesiological, myofascial, and joint adaptations that impede healing or prevent normal function in healthy clients.

Primary emphasis will be on treatment strategies for all three joints and movement training to return normal function to the smooth operation of all three joints.  This class has received rave reviews from Rolfers®, physical therapists, and podiatrists, as well as general bodywork therapists.

CLASS CONTENT:

  • Kinesiology and anatomy of the foot, knee, hip

  • Treatment strategies for the foot/ankle and connected soft tissue up the leg

    • Freeing the three arches

    • Balancing lateral and medial strain

    • Working in gravity to mobilize joints and improve function

  • Treatment strategies for the knee

    • Providing front/back and lateral/medial balance

    • Improving extension and flexion and releasing torsional strain

    • Working behind the knee and with patella-femoral function

  • Treatment strategies for the hip

    • Soft tissue techniques to improve

      • Flexion/extension

      • Rotation

      • Transition through pelvis to low back

Comments on the workshop

Art’s original training in kinesiology has always informed his Rolfing but it is nowhere more apparent and useful than in his unique understanding of myofascial influences on the knee joint. I cannot recommend this workshop too strongly. Art’s viewpoint regarding gait patterns and the myofascial influences on the knee joint is essential knowledge for any effective management of misalignment between the upper and lower leg and the resultant strains and feedback loops with the foot, knee, hip and pelvis. I wouldn’t miss it. ~Michael Salveson, Rolf Institute Advanced Faculty

I heartily recommend the upcoming workshop on the knee given by Art Riggs. Art Riggs’ knowledge is encyclopedic, particularly when it comes to knees. I have assisted Art in a number of trainings and I have found his patient, thorough, hands-on approach to teaching enables the student to readily absorb knowledge and new skills. ~ Bob Robinson, Rolfing since 1974

Prerequisites: Assuming experience and skills with deep tissue massage and myofascial release and anatomical knowledge of the pelvis, spine and associated musculature and ligaments.
